What is the difference between a tube bass amp and a solid-state bass amp?

A solid-state guitar amplifier uses electronic transistors to amplify the sound, while a tube amp uses vacuum tubes to amplify.

Tube amps can sound louder, but they are producing harmonics that are perceived by the human ear as volume rather than distortion. Solid stye amps distort at the same signal level as tube amps, but the distortion levels sounds like distortion and not volume.

When a tube amp and sold-state amp are turned up the will have different sounds. Tube amps will sound clean and "louder" while the solid-state amp will sound "quieter" and distorted.

What type of bass amp do I need?

There are two types of bass amps to choose from - a combo amp or an amp with a head and cabinet.

Combo Bass Amp

A combo bass amp combines the amplifier and speaker into one unit.

Head and Cabinet Amp

A head and cabinet amp is a two piece unit. The head determines your bass tone ad the amount of power you can deliver to your output. The cabinet - also called a cab - is a passive speaker that receives the signal from the amplifier.

  1. Wattage
