Do I need both delay and reverb pedals?

It all depends upon what kind of sound you want.

Both reverb and delay are time based effects but the main difference is that reverb emulates sound waves reflecting off surfaces to create a sense of three dimensional space. This will give you a "live" sound and the ability to recreate a specific setting (outdoor, empty concert hall, etc).

Delay will create a copy of a signal and play it back at a desired time interval to emulate an echo effect. It is often less muddy than a reverb pedal.

You can absolutely use both pedals in your chain to achieve your desired sound. If you are unsure where to start, give us a call or use the chat option!

What do I need to know about delay pedals?

There are two types of delay pedals - analog delay pedals and digital delay pedals.

Analog Delay Pedals

Analog delay pedals will give you a warm, natural, simple tone, with a short delay time. Analog pedals tend to have shorter maximum delay times than digital delay. The Maxon Compact AD-10 or the MXR M-169 Carbon Copy are great options.

Digital Delay Pedals

Digital delay pedals use DPS - digital signal processing chips. These pedals take a sample of what you are playing, turn it into an electronic medium, and then plays it back Digital pedals give you more control and more options - including a much longer delay - than analog pedals. A couple great options for digital delay are Source Audio One Series Nemesis Delay and Electro-Harmonix Canyon Delay and Looper.

Is a digital delay pedal or analog delay pedal better?

It really all depends upon what sound you are going after. Digital delay will have more consistency, while analog delay will give you more ability to show off the nuances of your playing. If you are unsure of what type of pedal will suit your needs, we can help! Give us a call or use the chat feature.

Can I do tap tempo on my delay pedal?

Some delay pedals have an on board tap tempo switch allowing you to sync the delay tempo to the tempo you're playing by simply tapping it with your foot. Some delays may have an input jack allowing this from an external switch or expression pedal.

Many delay pedals do not have tap tempo, so consider if this is something you prefer or not. If you are looking for a delay guitar pedal with tap tempo, you may want to consider Electro-Harmonix Stereo Memory Man 1100-TT Analog Delay, Electro-Harmonix Grand Canyon, Source Audio Nemesis delay, Electro-Harmonix Memory Man with Hazardi, or the Keeley Electronics Halo Andy Timmons Dual Echo.
